Quadra and Cortes Islanders could see some solutions for their passenger transportation issues, thanks to a new project.

Recent studies have shown that the options for passenger transportation are an issue for both islands, and the Cortes Community Economic Development Association is launching a new endeavour to tackle the issue. Community Consultation on Passenger Transportation Solutions, funded by the Island Coastal Economic Trust, and partners include the Cortes Island Community Foundation and the Quadra Island Climate Action Network (ICAN). The consultation will be community-led and they will seek input from residents of and visitors to Cortes, Quadra, and the Outer Islands.

“The hope is that this effort will finally make passenger transportation a reality on these islands,” a release from CCEDA says.

Some solutions that have already been suggested include: a community bus, ride hailing, taxi, and ridesharing/carpooling.

“No doubt other solutions exist as well,” the release says. “Prime considerations are reliability, convenience and frequency, as well as affordability and equity which are key to the success of any transportation endeavour.”

Local meetings on both islands are scheduled, and online engagement opportunities are also planned.

Guest speakers will share their experiences from other islands at the online Transportation Learning Forum, taking place on Tuesday, May 21, 7-9 p.m. via Zoom.

A survey is launching on May 13 will gather this information to identify transportation needs and potential solutions.

The local solutions will then be explored at community meetings open to residents and visitors alike, happening on June 1, 1-3 p.m. at the Quadra Legion, June 2 at Mansons Hall on Cortes, or June 6, 7-9 p.m. via Zoom.
