Grade 4 and 5 students across School District 72 (SD72) will receive a bike safety education course through a partnership with HUB Cycling.

“Being chosen as one of two recipient communities to receive the bike education program through HUB Cycling’s Small Community Pilot Project is very exciting. We are thrilled for our Grade 4 and 5 teachers to participate in this training so that they, in turn, can provide an opportunity for students to learn about bike safety skills, [and] rules of the road, and begin to develop their physical literacy skills and confidence on a bicycle,” says Georgina Knox, district physical literacy coordinator for the Campbell River School District.

Everyone Rides, HUB Cycling’s safety course, will be taught to students at Pinecrest, École des Deux Mondes, Sandowne, Ècole Willow Point, Ocean Grove, Ripple Rock, and Cedar elementary schools.

The pilot project is part of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Move Commute Connect Active Transportation Strategy.

The Everyone Rides program also includes a Learn2Ride course, which includes five lessons teaching students safety theory and on-bike skills at the school. Bicycles and helmets will be included and supplied by HUB Cycling.

“With this pilot - and hopefully expansion to more small communities - Campbell River School District becomes a leader in providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to use active transportation and stay safe on our roads. Raising a generation of sustainable transportation users is critical to realizing our health, climate action, and vision zero goals,” says Rose Gardner, HUB Cycling’s director of bike education.
