Young Masters hold down top spot

Campbell River soccer club scored another win last Saturday. This Saturday the team hosts Juan de Fuca

On a beautiful fall day, on a near immaculate pitch at Willow Point Park, Campbell River’s Mainstream Canada Young Masters soccer club enjoyed its fourth win of the season with a 4-1 defeat of Kal Tire Fernwood F.C. in Division 4B of the Vancouver Island Soccer League.

Mainstream Canada found themselves in a familiar predicament Saturday after giving up an early goal and having to work their way back into the game.  The home side found an equalizer at the 25-minute mark as Colan Grootenboer finished off a terrific cross from Kevin Shelswell.

Near the end of the first half, Patrick Cullen worked hard to deliver a lofted ball across goal which was headed home by Peter McWilliams. Several other quality chances were created by the Young Masters, but missed opportunities and good goalkeeping kept the score at 2-1 going into halftime.

In the second half, McWilliams scored his second goal of the game at the penalty spot after he was taken down by the Fernwood goalkeeper inside the penalty area.

Jake Blanchard earned his team their fourth and final goal of the game as he found the back of the net with a well placed strike from 20 yards.

Campbell River’s Aidan Anderson was confident in goal, but was not often tested due to strong and confident defence led by the central figures of Colton Reesor and Shane Berry.

Outside fullbacks Mohamed Boukhouali, Alex Foge, Alexandre Desrochers and Tyler Kelly also played well and often provided support to the team’s attack.

The victory places Mainstream Canada at the top of the standings with a record of four wins and one tie. They will play against Juan de Fuca this Saturday, 2 p.m., at Willow Point Park.
