On a rainy July 5-6 weekend, the Campbell River Salmon Kings swim club hosted more than 260 swimmers at Centennial Pool.
It was the highlight event of the Vancouver Island summer swimming season as not only do the Salmon Kings host a first rate swim meet, but also it is the only meet that allows camping on-site which makes for a real feeling of community.
As well the club host a Marine Harvest sponsored salmon barbeque for 300 and its 20th annual airband competition.
In difficult conditions, there were stellar swimming efforts on Saturday and Sunday, including the novice races where many swimmers, including Peyton Feltham, and Jasmine and Denver Flood, were able to experience their first competitive events.
While many best times were set, some phenomenal best times were established by Grayson Atherton, Bryn Bridgen, Alli Beck, Gavin Johnston, Gracie Lim, Samantha Tucker and Kobe Koizumi.
Amongst many highlights, one memory that stands out was a sendoff by all parents and swimmers to three Salmon Kings who are travelling to National Championships.
Nick Benner and Jesse Shade will be competing in the 2014 Canadian Special Olympics Championships and coach Taylor Padington will be attending the Canadian Nationals in July.
Despite the rain and the wind, the Campbell River Salmon Kings were able to pull off a phenomenal event.
