Campbell River will look a little shinier these days after athletes brought home two gold medals and two bronze medals.
Several athletes from the Campbell River area travelled to Calgary for the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, held from Feb. 27 to March 2.
Hazen Meade came in fourth place in the 400-metre snowshoeing event’s Division 7, finishing with a time of 01:49.004. Teammate Reise Collins followed him for fifth.
Collins had better luck in the 800-metre event, capturing gold in the Division 5 final. Meade also came good in the 800-metre event, securing a bronze medal in the Division 4 final. Meade was also in the Division 4 final but came in sixth.
Isiah Dyck finished seventh in the 100-metre Division 9 event, and eighth in 200-metre in Division 6.
Burton Collins and Maureen Hunter coached the snowshoers.
The gold medals didn’t stop with Collins though. Ashely Adie won gold in the 1600-metre event for Division 2, finishing it in just under 11 minutes. Collins also brought home another medal, getting a bronze in the same event but in Division 4. He finished the event in just over eight minutes.
The Campbell River Rocks came in third place in curling’s Wild Rose Division, with teams from New Brunswick, Ottawa and the Yukon. Campbell River’s team consists of Matthew Basso, Andrew Caulfield, Curtis Rinhofer, David Marsters, and Mickie Hildebrandt.
Each team played 10 games, with Campbell River only winning two. New Brunswick won all 10 games, while Ottawa won six.
Cheryl Clay and Terry Kratzmann are the coaches of the the team.
Matthieu Dyck joined the Comox Valley Vipers team in the Wild Rose Division for floor hockey. The team had a record of 2-5-2, which included a 4-3 win over Saskatchewan and a 3-1 win over a team from Quebec.
