Novice Ravens rally to first win

Four goals in final four minutes delivers comeback victory over previously unbeaten Alberni Valley

Campbell River’s novice Ravens lacrosse team picked a dramatic way to collect its first win, storming from behind with the final five goals to post a 12-10 win over previously unbeaten Alberni Valley in Vancouver Island Minor Lacrosse action at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Trailing 8-6 entering the third period, despite outshooting the visiting Tyees 30-14, the Ravens (1-3-2) got a goal from Carter Banman early in the third to trim the deficit to 8-7.

But that score held up until the middle of the period, and Alberni (4-1-1) buried two goals in the span of a minute and a half to build a seemingly comfortable 10-7 edge with less than nine minutes remaining in the game.

As it turned out, the Ravens had plenty left in the tank. Banman scored again at 11:35 to make it 10-8 and, with time ticking down below the four-minute mark, converted his third goal of the period to make it 10-9 with 3:37 remaining.

That touched off a land rush, with Wyatt Aarts tying the game 24 seconds later with a shot that was initially stopped before rolling slowly behind the goalie and into the Alberni net.

Maddex Frazee was next on the board, getting free behind the defence for a fast break game-winner at 17:56. Perhaps fittingly, Banman added a final insurance score with 1:13 to play. It was his fourth goal, all coming in the decisive third period.

Tristen Watson added a hat trick for the Ravens, and Ty Easton and Frazee each finished with two goals.

The Ravens return to action tonight with a home matchup against Comox Valley at 6:30.
