It may feel like spring like weather started around March 14, but as I headed across the bridge on Highway 19 heading to Sayward, there were a couple of noticeable fishing-related things that made me realize, its only March.

Water levels are high on the Campbell River and there were no signs of anglers fishing for catch-and-release trout. Meanwhile, the wind was calm and at Roberts Lake the water was clear and the north end of the lake shimmered like a mirror. Trout fishing will be very good in weeks to come. Some nature signs that were not visible are skunk cabbage starting to bloom in the creeks or yellow broom showing in the bush.

The Salmon River is fish-able and it may be a good time to get out and drift it this time of year for large catch and release cutthroat trout.

Mid-March, the herring spawn was evident in all areas from Comox to Qualicum Beach and this is when the commercial fishing boats get their quota of herring.Wildlife like gulls, eagles and sea lions feast in the spawning area. In shallow bays where the commercial boats can’t get into, the colored water is quite visible.

There are a number of anglers who keep their boats in the water all year long and when weather permits, get out fishing in Discovery Passage Area 13. They know when and where to go to get a 15 pound winter spring. This is the time of year where boats will be moved from their yard and slowly get out in the fishing zone, but it’s early yet. Remember, mid-April last year we got a dump of snow.

Hard core salmon anglers will take part in the Reel Obsessions Salmon Derby scheduled for June 14 and 15 in Zeballos. Funds are raised for Zeballos Community School and Salmon Habitat Restoration and Enhancement. Entry fee is $140 per rod which includes dinner. There is cash and prizes to be won and this event is well attended.

You can trailer a boat from Campbell River to the site and the road can be rough. I am in touch with Gibran White and will keep readers informed to any changes as we get closer to the event on the west coast.

Here in Campbell River, the Anchor Inn will be holding the Ladies Fishing Derby Sept. 19, 20 and 21. Information can be obtained online or contact the front desk for details. This is a time for the ladies to get into a boat and enjoy the salmon fishing experience. If you’re a lone angler you can register and get in with a small group and get out with a local fishing guide.

Fly-tying for beginners has wrapped up for the winter at the Seniors Centre and at the library, I am working on a few dates with a location to be determined when the weather warms up. It’s time to go fishing.
