Curlers find success at season-ending bonspiel

Campbell River winners at the recent season-ending North Island Co-op Gas Bar Mixed Open include the Lyle Boyce Rink

The Campbell River Curling Club recently wrapped up the season with the North Island Co-op Gas Bar Mixed Open.

Twenty-four teams participated in the annual bonspiel, which put the finishing touch on another successful season.

The A Event sponsored by ABL Electric was won by Ray Michell Rink from the Comox Valley. They played against the Francois Egan rink from Campbell River.

The B Event sponsored by Co-op Gas Bar was won by the Lyle Boyce Rink. He was joined by third Lonnie Schopp, second Don Pennell and lead Cynthia Lu. They were up against another local rink, that of Marita Martel.

The C Event sponsored by Home Hardware was won by the Steve Whynott rink from Comox Valley, who against the Nicole McCurrie rink from Campbell River.

The D Event sponsored by Van Isle Plumbing was won by the John LaPointe Rink, with third Tammy LaPointe, second Joe Johnson and lead Susan Johnson. This was a great comeback game against the Maday rink from Port Hardy.

Event co-ordinator John LaPointe would like to thank Comfort Zone Catering for the great banquet and all the staff and volunteers who helped during the weekend.

He sends a huge thank you to all the curlers who participated and especially all the new teams that joined us.

It was a fun-filled weekend of curling, with a great prize table valued at $7,000, and it was a wonderful way to wrap up the season.

After the awards ceremony, the club held its annual club appreciation night, where all league winners were recognized and some special awards were handed out.

Male Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Gord Gudbranson for his ongoing work with our Junior Program.

Female Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Angela Janicki for her work with the Juniors, as well as all Club Activities.

The Junior of the Year was awarded to Cody Chamberlin.

The Colleen Maga Award for outstanding service was awarded to long-time staff member Margie Cudmore.

To end the night,Terry Kratzmann was given a lifetime membership for his years of immeasurable contribution to the Campbell River Curling Club.
