Rural living not so idyllic

This is obviously a tax grab and will be remembered come election time

If you bought or built your dream home here in Area D, you have seen your water rates skyrocket in the last two years.

Even though the water rates between Campbell River and Area D were negotiated in April of this year – for the Campbell River residential rate ($288) plus 50 per cent – why are some of us paying the residential rate plus upwards of 300 per cent? I personally am paying over $800/year for water, What are you paying? Check your tax notice and don’t forget to add in the extra $260 yearly water bill.

It seems the director took it upon herself to tie the water rates to the assessed value of your property. This is not been done in any city, municipality or area on Vancouver Island. It is very discriminatory against those property owners whose assessed value is above the average property value of $300,000.

Why should a small percentage of Area D be subsidizing the remaining population of the area? Water rates should be the same for all, regardless of property value.

This is obviously a tax grab and will be remembered come election time.
