Come on folks, be more tolerant

Letters to the Editor

I was sad to read about the York Road residents’ vehement reaction to a proposed reserve in their neighborhood.  May I respectfully suggest that property owners reflect on the colonization of Canada and whose land we all live on. The Indigenous People of this country were left with bad treaties or no treaties and a bit of reservation land.  And 140 years of life under The Indian Act.   Poverty and inadequate health care,  hopelessness and teen suicides is the lived reality of many isolated First Nations communities. We can all be good neighbors and share and care about each other.  There are many issues to address with this as with any community development.

Come on folks, please be kind and tolerant.  Let’s get on with good planning and welcome people to join us in this part of beautiful Vancouver Island.
