January 28, 1951 - March 23, 2024
In Loving Memory ~
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our brother Walter Dion. Born January 28, 1951 in Flin Flon Manitoba, Walter passed away peacefully at Campbell River Hospital March 23, 2024.
Predeceased by his sister Lorelei, Dad Lawrence (Dink) Dion, Mother Frances (Dodo) Dion and Brother Danny Dion.
Survived by his sisters Karen (Al) Hares and Michelle (Henry) Albrecht and many nephews, nieces and cousins.
As a young child in The Pas Manitoba Walter spent his summers on Clearwater Lake, putting about in a little tin boat or getting into shenanigans with his cousins.
Walter moved to Campbell River with his family in 1964. He and his brother Danny quickly became very active and well known in the community. Always together and always present at any community event, many Riverites fondly referred to them as "The Twins" (although they were not twins).
Many will remember how they rode their bikes all over town, never together, and often confusing people as to how a person could go so quickly from one end of town to the other. Until they realized they were actually two people!
Walter was an accomplished athlete, active with Special Olympics since its' inception in Campbell River. He competed in Floor Hockey, Swimming, Track and Field, Soccer, bowling and Bocce Ball.
In 1983 Walter was chosen to represent Team Canada in Floor Hockey at the International Special Olympic Games in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Walter scored the winning goal that advanced them into the finals. The team came home with a Silver Medal.
Walter and his brother Danny were long time Storm Hockey Season Ticket holders. The loudest fans at any hockey game and usually could be heard critiquing the game or what they felt the team needed to do.
Many, many thanks to Dr. deBruin and all the kind, caring nurses at CR Hospital. Special thanks to the staff of the Nikola Road Group Home, your kind and compassionate care is outstanding. Walter was one of the original beneficiaries of RiverCity Inclusion Society's services starting back in 1964.
Walter's parents were founding member of the society and hence he grew up with RiverCity Inclusion being a huge part of his life, he even lent a hand during the construction of the "Our Place" building in 1975. As Walter changed, so did their services, matching his needs through every change. We will always be grateful for this amazing organization.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday April 11, 2024 at 11:30am at the Eagles Hall, 1999 - 14th Ave in Campbell River. Please join the family for music, sharing of stories and light refreshments. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to RiverCity Inclusion Society.
