Ralph was born in Pine Falls, Manitoba. When he was 16, he lied about his age and started working at the paper mill there. In 1952, he road his motorcycle west to Campbell River and started work at Elk Falls Paper Mill. He became a world class paper maker which allowed him and his crew to set world records in the paper making industry. He retired in 1985, after working his way up to superintendent of all five paper machines.
During his 67 years in Campbell River, he was an avid outdoorsman; fishing, hunting, boating, and building cabins in remote areas such as Amor Lake, McCreight Lake and Nazco on the Clisbako River in the interior of BC.
While in retirement he became an expert lathe turner, making dozens and dozens of bowls which he gave to people all over the world.
Ralph passed away surrounded by loved ones as well as the caring and loving staff of New Horizons. He is survived and will be lovingly remembered by his sister Agnes Smyrski, niece Linda (Ken), nephews Tim (Jackie) and Dale. He leaves behind many life-long friends, including; Gord Lee (Sharon) as well as stepchildren Deanna, Steven, and Chase. He was predeceased by his parents George and Agnes, his loving wife Nona, stepson Guy and brother George Junior, and sisters Pearl and Ruth.
As per Ralph's wishes, there will be no service.
