Peter (Pleun)

van Reeuwyk

April 3, 1915

-June 10, 2011

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Peter van Reeuwyk. Dad was born in Zoetermeer, Holland, the fourth of eight children by Neeltje and Hendrik van Reeuwijk. Peter was predeceased in 2002 by his wife Mary; granddaughter Lisa van Reeuwyk (1999); as well as 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

He was a fair and honest man who loved his wife and children deeply. Peter and Mary were wed in 1940. They were inseparable, best friends from the start and are now reunited.

Peter is survived by his three children Maria (Dave) Danis; Bram (Carol) van Reeuwyk; and Yolanda (Craig) Turnbull. His 6 grandchildren, Steve Danis, Mike (Kristen) Danis, Richard (Lisa-Marie) van Reeuwyk; Lana (Paul) Proznick; Shannon Turnbull and Mark (Kaylee)Turnbull. Also survived by ten great-grandchildren Matteo, Lorenzo and Dominic Danis; Molly, Mathew and McCall Danis; Sofia and Summer van Reeuwyk; Chase and Sydney Proznick.

Peter, Mary and their three children immigrated to Canada in December 1951, traveling across Canada by train from Halifax and ending their journey in Vancouver. From Vancouver, Peter found employment at the Comox Airbase as a construction labourer. The family then settled in the Comox Valley.

In 1955 Peter became an agent for Comox Co-op Creamery to sell and distribute dairy products in the North Island area and the family relocated to Campbell River.

Peter’s business developed very successfully and in 1969 he sold to Fraser Valley Milk Producers (Dairyland) who had merged with Comox Creamery. Peter worked for Dairyland until 1971 and then focused on his other business interests including property development in Courtenay.

For many years, Peter and Mary enjoyed their family, their church, fishing, their Foreshore walks and many other pleasures of Campbell River. They travelled extensively including several trips to visit their relatives in Holland and twenty seven winters in the California sun.

The family extends a special thank you to his many friends, CR Baptist Church, the caregivers at Yucalta Lodge, Vesna (Caregiver) and especially Dr. Veerapen for their expertise, empathy, kindness and prayers during dad’s care.

Services will be held at Campbell River Baptist Church at 1:00pm Friday, June 17, 2011 followed by interment at the Elk Falls Cemetery.

Donations may be made in the memory of Peter to the Campbell River Hospice Society.
