Joan is lovingly remembered by her family and many friends. She saw strangers as friends she hadn't met yet. She was always ready for adventure! Over the years her many hobbies included waterskiing, scuba diving, getting her private pilots' licence, playing the piano and harp, travelling overseas to visit friends, running marathons, cycling in the GranFondo, walking in the woods, and taking wildlife photos.
She started working for Fletcher's Fine Foods in 1979 and continued with the company until she retired from Premium Brands Holdings in 2019.
Joan became a Christian as a teenager. Her faith in the Lord became much stronger in the last two years, as she faced the challenges of pancreatic cancer.
She was at peace, and four days before she died, she prayed: "Thank you Jesus. I'll see you really soon."
She loved the church family at Cedar Grove Baptist, and was greatly encouraged by them.
Joan was predeceased by her Dad, Ed Spencer (1996), her Mom, Kay Spencer (1999) and sister Trish (2001).
She is survived by her sister Anne (Brian) Burkholder of Chemainus, and cousins from the Westcoast of BC, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Newfoundland.
The family gives grateful thanks to her many doctors and nurses, the Burnaby Home-Care Nurses, the Burnaby Home Support workers, St. Michael's Hospice, and to her many friends, who supported her in so many ways. Joan ran her last marathon and is now rejoicing with her Lord, in heaven.
Arrangements by Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services, Aldergrove. A Zoom memorial service has already taken place.
