Hailey Ricard passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Jan 6, 2022. She was 18 years old.
Hailey was born in Comox and from the moment she was born, she was a sensitive child. As she grew older and Hailey's beauty on the inside started to shine, it was clear that she was an empathetic, kind, and thoughtful child. A lover of all animals, especially dogs, she wanted to be a vet until she realized that meant she would have to help animals that were suffering or in pain, and she couldn't bear that. Because of her love of animals, Hailey became a vegetarian after watching a video of someone playing fetch with a cow. She deeply loved our family dog, Roxie, and her phone is filled with hundreds of pictures and videos of our little white dog.
Hailey was creative and artistic and loved music, learning how to play the clarinet, piano and guitar. She grew up listening to her parents rock and roll and 90's grunge playlists and at 14 declared "no one makes good music anymore!". At home Hailey regularly sketched and enjoyed embroidering embellishments on her clothing. She was a gifted athlete and tried many sports including soccer, baseball, dance, gymnastics, track, basketball, mountain biking and rugby. It wasn't until grade 6 that she found her passions: wrestling and swimming. We have many cherished memories from the 6 years our family spent with the Campbell River Wrestling Association and the Campbell River Salmon Kings.
Hailey loved thrift store shopping, watching anime, and coffee. Her dream was to one day have a little farm like her Mémé and Pépé and look after a gaggle of animals. She loved her friends and family deeply and always ended every conversation, goodbye, and bedtime with an 'I love you'. If you didn't reply with the same, she would wait expectedly until you had. Once as an early teen, Hailey told her mother that she never wanted to regret not saying 'I love you' in case that was the last time she spoke to someone.
After graduation Hailey wanted to travel and was planning a hike in the Grand Canyon in May. Although Hailey will not be able to complete this experience, she did get to travel in her short life. With her family, Hailey explored much of Vancouver Island and visited Disney Land, San Diego, Palm Springs, Mexico, Cuba,
and Hawaii, and in Grade 8 visited Montreal and Quebec City with her French Immersion class. Hailey's most treasured trip was the 3 months she spent in Lyon, France on a school exchange. The Schneiders became her second family and Hailey had every intention of seeing them again.
Hailey is survived by her parents Ryan and Rachel, and her younger sister Ella; grand parents Paul and Lois Ricard and Jacques and Gisèle Ricard, uncles Tyson (Shelley) and Marc, cousins Bliss and Summer, by her extended family of great aunts, uncles and cousins, and by the countless friends she made over the years. We love you and are heartbroken at your passing.
While we will never understand why our beautiful daughter was taken from us so young, we are grateful for so many things within this tragedy, and one of them is that Hailey was able to gift her organs and save lives - something she passionately believed in. Her heart beats on.
A service will be planned in spring or summer when we can gather again. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Hailey's memory to Qwalayu House, which is operated by the Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. Or you can just do something kind for someone...Hailey would love that.
