April 10, 1947 - January 22, 2024

In loving memory ~

It's with deep sadness we announce the passing of Gordon Melnick on January 22, 2024, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janie, his daughters, Jacqueline (Mark) and Deanna (Bill) and grandchildren, Alex, Makena, Kai, and Mya.

Gordon was born April 10, 1947, in Shellmouth, Manitoba, the fourth of 10 children. Growing up on the family farm, Gordon learned the value of hard work and how to repair most things. Seeking a change of pace, he ventured out on his own to British Columbia at the age of 19. In 1965 he met Stan St. Jean and they became partners. Stan introduced him to his sister, Janie, which turned out to be the love of his life. On April 4, 1970, Gordon and Janie were married in Port Coquitlam, BC.

Gordon worked for many companies in the Vancouver area for about 10 years. After the birth of their two daughters, the couple decided to escape the big city and relocated to Saratoga Beach, which continues to be the family home. Along with his new partner and friend, Dave White, he built logging roads on the island for companies at various locations. To operate the work camp properly, he had to get food, equipment, and men into remote places. This challenge prompted him to buy a Cessna 180 float plane to complete these services. He continued to be involved in logging for 10 years. Once his logging business closed, he built the Willows Market at Willow Point.

Gordie had various hobbies. Fishing with family and friends was a major interest. Nootka Sound was one of his favourite places and often went there with his fishing buddies for a few days. His other pastimes included making things out of metal or wood. Some items he made were requested while others he just made for the enjoyment of accomplishing the task. He built his own greenhouse and was always proud of the various vegetables that grew there.

Although Gordie appeared outwardly tough and gruff, once you got to know him, you realized that he had a heart of gold. He was always there to help neighbours, and friends, fixing whatever needed repair. Along with Janie, he enjoyed having friends and family visit where he barbequed and told stories. His family meant everything to him, especially Janie. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren and what they have in life. An important value for Gordie was to make sure his family was well taken care of.

We would like to thank the nurses and doctors at the Comox hospital for their care of Gordon. As well, thank you to the many friends and family that sent lovely cards and flowers.

Gordon, we send you with wings to the high above and may you rest in peace.

Love you forever.
