Gloria Jean Van Bergen
(nee Mountain)
March 6, 1942 – February 28, 2009
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gloria, loving wife, mom and grandmother, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Gloria was born in Victoria B.C. and spent her early childhood on James Island. In 1947 the family moved to Qualicum Beach where Gloria attended school. It was here at the age of 13 that Gloria met Bill and, as young as she was, fell in love.
In 1957 Gloria moved to Port Alberni with her mother and sister. In 1958 Gloria and Bill were married and took up residence at the MacMillan Bloedel, Franklin River logging camp. Many happy memories are from the time spent there, including the birth of their son. In 1969 the family moved to Port Hardy and then in 1974 made their final move to Campbell River.
Gloria’s greatest role in life was as wife and mother. She was a fabulous knitter, sewer, and housekeeper extraordinaire .
She is survived by her husband Bill; son Tony; daughter-in-law Rita and grand children, Jessica and Rebecca. She will be deeply missed by family and friends and will be in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers it would be appreciated by the family if donations could be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Campbell River Hospital Foundation.
As an era comes to a close
A most fond memory could never be chose
Wife, Mother, Grandmother
To bare the loss of one so dear we cling together
Your will to stay was ever strong
Alas, even strength can only battle so long
Now in the story our paths must part
Memories of you live freely in our hearts
Where you lead we cannot follow
Know the love you shared was never hollow
To touch your hand, to kiss your face
Always returned with your warm embrace
May the joy of your life bring light to our tears
As we continue to love you throughout the years
Farewell and goodbye are not the end
You are treasured within until we meet again.
–Rebecca
