George Norman Tait, born in Cumberland, BC. passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on Saturday May 14th, 2016 in Campbell River, B.C.

George will be greatly missed by his family, his wife of 54 years Audrey (nee Stewart), son Brian (Ann), daughter Noreen (Sean) and sister Joanne (Mike) of Brampton, ON.  “Papa” also played a large part in the lives, and will be missed dearly, by Grandchildren Duncan, Tayden, Nyah and Bryson. Dad is also survived by many nephews and nieces throughout B.C. and Ontario.

In his early years George showed athletic prowess on the ball diamond and the basketball court winning various Vancouver Island championships while playing for Cumberland High School.  Dad put this athletic ability to use in the community of Campbell River through his work coaching minor hockey, baseball and girls’ softball for many years.  He was also a member of the Campbell River Lions club.

Mom and Dad moved to Campbell River in 1962 where George worked at Elk Falls Pulp Mill for 10 years.  During that time he became a volunteer with the Campbell River Fire Department.  In July 1971 he took up his true passion and became a full-time fire fighter.    Throughout his years with the service he held a variety of positions eventually retiring as Deputy Chief in August 1996.  He was always so proud of his years of service to the community as a member of the Campbell River Fire Department.

Over the last few years as his health faded he remained positive and inspiring.  His helpful, caring and peaceful manner will always be remembered by those who knew him.  He will be forever in our hearts.

The family would like to thanks Drs. Carswell and Veerapen and the staff at Yucalta Lodge for taking care of Dad over the years.

Flowers gratefully declined. A donation in George’s memory to Alzheimer Society British Columbia would be appreciated.
