Annie “June” Cassidy (nee Spiers)

March 17, 1925 – March 21, 2019
June was born in 1925 in a farm house near Huntsville, Ontario. Over the years the family gradually moved westward eventually settling in Campbell River in 1939. She graduated from St Paul’s Hospital as a RN in 1947 and moved to Lourdes Hospital in Campbell River in 1949. After marrying George in 1950 they moved to the Nimpkish Valley and 14 years later to Burnaby where she continued her nursing, specializing in maternity care. Planning ahead for retirement June took a job in the maternity ward at Campbell River Hospital in 1974. She later was involved in the Hospital Auxiliary and spearheading the funding for the first birthing room at the hospital. After George passed away in 1986 June moved to Coquitlam to be close to her only grandchild.

Predeceased by her parents Ron and Ella Spiers, husband George Cassidy, and brother Ken Spiers, June leaves wonderful memories for her daughters Judith Tucker (Campbell River); Joanne (Richard) Easdown (Merritt); Paula (Rick) Davies (Campbell River/Oamaru NZ); grandson Jesse (Amanda) Tucker (Port Coquitlam); siblings Rosalea Warkentin (Chilliwack); Kathleen/Kay Wilson (Australia); Vernon (Norma) Spiers (Prince George); sister-in-law Carmen Cheney (Campbell River); and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and more cousins, as well as many she considered “her other daughters”.

June returned to Campbell River in July 2018 to be closer to family and resided at Ironwood Place where her “angels” provided excellent care. She passed away peacefully in her sleep in hospital a few days after her 94th St. Patrick’s Day birthday.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Fourie and the doctors, nurses and paramedics who had previously attended to June.

A tea to celebrate an amazing woman and a life well lived will be held on Monday May 20 at the Masonic Hall from 1 – 3 pm.
