The Campbell River Storm are vying to play host to the Cyclone Taylor Cup tournament.
The Storm put forward an application after tournament organizers came calling.
Mayor Andy Adams told council Monday night that the club’s recent accomplishments piqued organizers’ interest.
“I can say that as a result of (the Storm’s) success, the Cyclone Taylor Cup organization has approached Strathcona Gardens and the Storm franchise about hosting the Cyclone Taylor Cup again, here in Campbell River,” said Adams.
“An application has already been submitted and I think it’s great news.”
Campbell River hosted the Cyclone Taylor Cup, which is a provincial Junior B level championship, in 2004 when the team lost to the Richmond Sockeyes.
This year, the Storm ran the table at the Cyclone Taylor Cup, which was held in Mission, going undefeated and earning themselves not only the Cyclone Taylor Cup but a trip to the Keystone Cup.
The Storm won that too, becoming Western Canadian champions and losing just one game throughout the entire Keystone Cup tournament which was held in Cold Lake, Alberta.
Adams joked Monday night that, after watching the final gold medal game, he’s confident Campbell River fans could outdo their Alberta counterparts.
“I think we would do far better in attendance if it was held here,” Adams said.
Adams congratulated the dedicated Storm chasers who made the trek to Cold Lake to cheer on their team and those who congregated in the mezzanine at Strathcona Gardens to watch a live feed of the final game which the Storm won by a decisive 6-3 score over the North Edmonton Red Wings last Sunday.
Adams also congratulated the Storm itself for a tremendous season.
“I think this is an outstanding accomplishment for the franchise, the players, the coaches and the fans and our whole community,” Adams said.
Council, getting into the spirit, agreed to give the Storm $1,000 for a community reception event on Sunday which includes an awards banquet at Strathcona Gardens, preceded by a public event in Spirit Square at 3 p.m.
The money will come out of council’s contingency account.
