Two men injured after car hit by suspected drunk driver in Campbell River

Two men escaped serious injury after a suspected drunk driver plowed into their car early Saturday morning.

The accident occurred on Harrogate Road near Erickson Road around 1:25 a.m. According to Campbell River RCMP, the men in the black 2003 BMW were northbound when they were hit head-on by a brown 2011 Dodge pickup. Witnesses who called 911 also reported seeing the driver of the pickup flee on foot.

Emergency crews assisted a 38-year-old local man and a 40-year-old Calgary resident from the heavily-damaged vehicle. Both were taken to Campbell River Hospital and later released.

In the meantime, officers and a police dog followed a track which led  to the Island Highway near Erickson Road.

A 28-year-old Campbell River man was found and taken to hospital for treatment of facial lacerations. The investigation is continuing with police considering charging him with failing to remain at the scene of an accident, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and impaired driving causing bodily harm. The man’s name was not released.
