North Island Film Commission recognized by the province

The Vancouver Island North Film Commissionwill receive $30,000 in funding from the provincial government this year.

“We are very pleased that the government does recognize our work because it brings economic development to both the region and the province,” said Vancouver Island North Film Commissioner Joan Miller.

The Vancouver Island North Film Commission serves the Island north of Nanaimo by promoting the region to the film industry; providing information on local crew, equipment, and services; and representing the interests of local communities. Since 1995, the Vancouver Island North Film Commission has been involved in film productions which generated more than $80 million in economic impact on local communities.

The $30,000 will go into the Commission’s core budget, as it is only one source of funding it receives to keep the budget on track.

“We have to apply for funding from about 15 different funders and hope that the funding comes through,” said Miller. “The $30,000 that we do get from the province shows their faith in what we do,” she explained.

In total $275,000 was given out to regional film commissions and agencies across the province. B.C. is the third-largest production centre in North America after Los Angeles and New York.

“Since 1978, the B.C. Film Commission has successfully showcased the province as a motion picture production centre and filming destination,” said B.C. Film Commissioner Susan Croome in a news release.

“Regional commissions and organizations are instrumental in building and promoting B.C.’s inventory of locations.”
