No more border services at Campbell River airport

Canadian Border Services Agency to consolidate its airport services with Comox Valley's

The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) informed the public in the Oct. 31 edition of the Mirror that its Campbell River location would cease operations as of Nov. 1.

“All existing client services will be relocated to the Comox Valley Airport,” according to the public notice.

The CBSA “respectfully declined” the Mirror’s request for an interview on the closure, instead issuing an emailed statement, saying,

“The Agency routinely conducts reviews to ensure that each service location operates at maximum efficiency,” and that those assessments include reviews of smaller ports to seek efficiencies in terms of resource allocation.

“A recent such review on Northern Vancouver Island determined that the services offered at our Campbell River and Comox Valley Airport (CVA) locations could be consolidated to better align our resources and allow us to more effectively manage the growing number of passengers arriving at the CVA while maintaining service to clients currently using the Campbell River office.

“This change in service allows the CBSA to better focus resources on priority areas that promote enhanced service contributing to the health, security and safety of Canadians.”

According to the response to a follow-up request for information, no job losses occurred because of the office closure.

The employees previously working out of the Campbell River office are now working out of the CVA location.
