Bargaining continues as Nystar and union officials attempt to avoid a strike Wednesday at the Myra Falls mine near Campbell River.
On Friday, miners voted 99.5 per cent in favour of walking off the job if a new contract agreement is not reached.
"Our local is in a strike position on Monday, following a 72-hour notice to the company," said Shine Boyce, in a news release to members that appeared on the union's website.
"This does not mean that we will be on strike Monday. It means that we are in a legal position to strike."
Negotiations with Nystar are continuing today and Tuesday. The strike vote was held after four meetings in two days failed to produce a new contract.
The key issue is wages with miners believed to be looking for $3-$5 more per hour, based on comparable wages at other B.C. mines.
Nystar officials have not yet commented on the strike vote.
According to the company website, the Myra Falls operation – located approximately 90 kilometres west of Campbell River in Strathcona Provincial Park – employs 282 people.
The mine produces zinc, copper and lead concentrates, along with silver and gold.
