MLA named Transport Critic

North Island MLA Claire Trevena, a Quadra Island resident, has a lot to say about BC Ferries

Call it the “planes, trains and automobiles” gig or “transportation critic” which is just fine with North Island MLA Claire Trevena.

Recently elected to her third straight term, Trevena wasnamed to the NDP’s shadow cabinet. Officially, she’s the opposition critic for transportation, highways and BC Ferries, and last week it was back to business at the Legislature in Victoria.

“I have a lot to say about ferries,” said the Quadra Island resident. “The bottom line for ferry dependant communities is affordability. It inhibits doing anything as a family…and families are moving away.”

The challenge, she added, for the ruling Liberal party is sustainability for both BC Ferries and the small island communities which depend on the service.

“It drives the economy and tourism,” she said.

Another issue for Vancouver Island is the idle E&N Railway.

“What are the options? Let’s address it and come up with a strategy,” Trevena said.
