This Pontiac Grand Am sits in a ditch off the Island Highway just north of Engles Road after what appears to be a case of the teenage driver falling asleep at the wheel Monday afternoon.

A single-vehicle accident on the Island Highway Monday afternoon caused a fire hydrant to erupt.

Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard of the Campbell River RCMP said an 18-year-old female driver went off the road just north of Engles Road around noon, crashing into a ditch and hitting a fire hydrant.

“It appears the driver may have fallen asleep,” Beauregard said.

“There were no injuries to the driver but she was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

He said the air bag in the driver’s dark blue Pontiac Grand Am didn’t deploy but the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Beauregard said there was a minor water spill as a result of the car crashing into the fire hydrant.

“Water escaped as a result and the city came and turned it off,” he said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
