Accident south of Campbell River leaves man in critical condition

An early morning accident on the Old Island Highway has left a young Courtenay man in critical condition

A young man is in critical condition after a single-vehicle collision on the Old Island Highway Wednesday morning.

Comox Valley RCMP said an 18-year-old Courtenay man was travelling northbound on Highway 19A near Hamm Road at 7:30 a.m. when his vehicle ended up in a ditch.

The man was driving a white 1998 Geo Metro and crossed the centre line before going off the road.

RCMP said the man was last known to be in critical condition and was airlifted to hospital in Victoria.

There were no other passengers in the vehicle and no other vehicles involved.

The Comox Valley’s RCMP Traffic Unit, along with the RCMP collision analyst section are working to determine the cause of the accident.

The RCMP thanks the public for its patience as traffic was re-routed for most of the morning.
