Campbell River will be well represented at the 35th Annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic All-Star Games on April 6.

The basketball tournament will be at Victoria’s Spectrum School on April 6 and will have five players from Carihi Secondary School on the court.

Coaches for the North Island girls’ team selected Nola Cooledge and Ava Lee for the girls team.

“Both athletes played huge roles on our team and were instrumental in getting us to the Island Championships in Victoria,” says Todd Barnes, Carihi girl’s head coach.

Cooledge was one of the team captains, and probably one of the hardest-working basketball players Barnes has coached, he says. Barnes described her as a player who leads by example, never gives up and was often the team’s leading scorer during her time at Carihi.

Barnes says Lee’s hard work was contagious and encouraged everyone on the team to give their best effort.

“I was extremely impressed with Ava’s fiery nature, dedication to the team and tremendous outside shot.”

Zach Auramenko, Rhys Merwin, and Bowen Blaikie were selected for the Boys “A” team.

Cooledge and Auramenko play as forwards, while the other three are guards.

“Our three represent the North Island and is a good reflection of the skill level they have demonstrated over these years,” says Donnie Fitzpatrick, head coach of the Carihi Tyees boys team. “These boys have worked extremely hard over the past three years I have coached them. It is a nice way to cap off and celebrate their high school basketball careers.”
