Campbell River Mirror journalists took home silver in this year’s B.C. and Yukon Community Newsmedia Association’s Ma Murray awards.

The awards were presented in Vancouver on April 20. The Mirror was nominated for The People Project in the Special Publications category. The magazine features stories of people who make Campbell River the special place that it is, and has been published for two years as of 2024. The magazine was edited by Marc Kitteringham, and featured writing from Kitteringham, Alistair Taylor and Edward Hitchins.

The awards recognize excellence in advertising, writing and photography as well as special publications as created by community news organizations around British Columbia and Yukon.

Margaret “Ma” Murray was a Canadian newspaper editor, publisher and columnist, as well as an Order of Canada officer. She built a legendary reputation running newspapers in British Columbia’s northeast with a spicy wit, rural wisdom and strong opinions. Her editorials were often signed off with the phrase “And that’s fer damshur!”
