Another night of psychedelic, stoner and indie rock is on deck in Campbell River.

The third installment of the Indie Rock in the River series has been scheduled for Nov. 18. The show will feature the first hometown show of local band Vogue Villains, as well as a few other acts from nearby communities.

“We were really lucky to get our headliner,” said organizer James Wood about Vogue Villains. “They’re a local band, and they’re kind of a superstar band, but they’ve never actually played in Campbell River … these guys are blowing up everywhere, selling out shows in Victoria and playing in Vancouver.”

He described Vogue Villains as “a cross between the Arctic Monkeys and Queens of the Stone Age.”

Also on the bill is Sonder, a band from Cumberland who describes their sound as “Heavy Acid Rock.”

“They put on a really good show,” Wood said. “They’re all lifetime musicians, and they’ve got this new project and it’s really cool … I think they’re kind of like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.”

They’re not the only band from Cumberland, they’ll be joined by OfCosmos, a psychedelic band that defies easy explanation.

“To be honest, they’re pretty hard to pigeonhole into a genre,” Wood says. “I asked them ‘How would you how would you describe your music’ and they said well, ‘psychedelic folk, dubstep, reggae and funk.’ “

“You know you’re gonna get out there and you’re gonna dance your face off,” he says.

Another hometown group will be rounding out the bill. Wood himself will be taking the stage, joined by fellow Campbell River musician and Highway 19 Productions director Lucas Schuller on drums for the debut of Jim and the Legacies.

While he appreciates the hard work of his former robot drum machine Gary, he says Schuller is “an excellent jazz drummer and gives it a really cool flavour that Gary (which, for those not in on the joke is a programmable drum machine) couldn’t do.”

Wood said he is looking forward to seeing people have a good time.

“Why we’re doing this is just to see their faces and just have people listening to live music and dancing and getting out of this post-COVID world that we lived in. I think we really kind of need this stuff.”

The show will be held again at the Willow Point Hall, located at 2165 South Island Highway. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the first band taking the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets are available online for $27.96. As of Thursday (Nov. 2) afternoon, 64 tickets remain. The show is 19+.
