Local business nabs Premier “People’s Choice” award at ceremony in Vancouver

With over 600 nominees in just four categories, Campbell River’s Discovery Fabrics happened to be a cut above the rest during the 2023 Small Business BC (SBBC) Awards announced June 2.

The locally based, family-run brand nabbed the Premier People’s Choice Award. This unique award category, sponsored by the Province of British Columbia, hands out the award to a business that demonstrates unwavering and loyal support to their community.

“This award means a lot to us because worked so hard to create a business,” said Hanes. “Our business sustains our employees, satisfies our own needs and wants, and is just a great place to work.”

A maker of high-performance fabrics, which are usually only available for top active-wear and outerwear brands, available to home sewists and makers. Alongside that, they educate customers on technologies that can enhance garments.

They send fabrics all across North America from their home base in Campbell River.

Discovery Fabrics were just one of the award winners honoured from Vancouver Island. Ucluelet-based Mint Cleaning took home the award for E-Commerce Experience. Other award winners included The Speckled Sow Butchery from Vanderhoof, and Jackie Rhind and Christina Wizel from Revelstoke, who took home the Best Youth Entrepreneur honors.

Each winner receives a professional videography from SBBC Partner, True Calling, one year of free consultation and advisory support from SBBC, and a $10,000 cash prize.
