English folk singer Richard Grainger highlights the next open house concert hosted by Gardeners Green Folk Music Club.

Grainger, who is on tour, performs this Saturday at 7 p.m.

He has been very active for years in the folk club and folk festival scene in the U.K., both as a performer and as artistic director for various festivals. He was born in Middlesbrough, an industrial town on the north east coast of England, and now lives in a village on the North York Moors.

Grainger is a singer/songwriter whose music is steeped in the Northumbrian and English folk traditions. He became a member of the legendary Teesside Fettlers in the late 1980s. He was singing from an early age with his musical family, and has never stopped.

Today, with more than a dozen albums to his credit, he is acknowledged as one of the finest exponents of folk song in the U.K. and respected for his tireless efforts to promote folk music. Grainger has toured extensively, with performances in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and throughout Europe. His performances are marked by his unique style of guitar accompaniment and like many of his fellow Yorkshiremen, by his engaging sense of humour.

As this is a house concert, taking place in a private home, seating will be limited. Tickets are $20 ($10 children) and include a bountiful dessert buffet and hot drinks.

Gardeners Green is a non-profit organization, and all proceeds go directly to the performer. The evening will also include a charity raffle. To date Gardeners Green Folk Music Club has raised nearly $3,000 for Families for Children (www.familiesforchildren.ca).
