From Prague, Czech Republic, by way of B.C.’s Cariboo region, then to North Vancouver, and finally to 262 Island Highway in Campbell River, Pavel Barta is hoping he’s found his permanent home and is eager to share what he does with the Mid-Island community.
After leaving his life as a graphic designer with a publishing company, Barta fell in love with creating sculpture. Beginning with small, handcrafted clay figures, he quickly scaled up, and now produces large bronze and fiberglass outdoor sculptures, as well.
“I try to make it so that my sculptures have movement, even though they’re static,” he said as he looked around his small gallery at the front of his property, adding, “I guess that’s why I love sport as a subject.”
His other primary subject is wildlife, and the treatment of his subjects is such that though they are recognizable forms, he’s added an emphasis and angularity to some of the lines, giving them a feel of abstraction and expressionism.
Barta is inviting the public to his studio/gallery’s grand opening Aug. 9 from 2 to 6 p.m., where he will explain and demonstrate his processes for creating his work and introduce himself to the community.
