Join cellist, Helena Jung, and pianist, Carter Johnson, in a special recital featuring selections from Beethoven and Schumann on Friday, March 15 in Campbell River and Saturday, March 16 in Comox.

Jung enjoys pursuing an eclectic repertoire, having performed with many well-known pianists as well as playing cello with the Vancouver Island Symphony since 2005.

In the Comox Valley and surrounds, she has been a performer and faculty member at Concerts Denman, Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra, Quadra Chamber Music Festival, and the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre. Jung is also the Music Director and conductor for the Strathcona Symphony Orchestra and Hello Strings, a beginner string orchestra. Since 2007, she has presented her own cello series, Cellobration, and her students’ concerts, Hello Cello! Recently, Jung has been leading a cello community group, Cello Playground, and Kids on Strings, to encourage young musicians to share their love for music with one another.

“Both Beethoven and Schumann created beautiful musical conversations between the cello and piano,” Jung said.

“The expressive storytelling from this partnership establishes a powerful and nuanced concert as it showcases the depth and versatility of their music,” she said.

The March concerts will be Carter Johnson’s first performances on Vancouver Island in several years. Although Johnson grew up in Campbell River, he is now completing a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) at Connecticut’s Yale University, where he lives with his wife and two sons. Since his last appearance on Vancouver Island, Johnson has won multiple international competitions and given solo and concerto performances in France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Poland, and Australia.

The recital of Beethoven and Schumann selections is on Friday, March 15 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 145 Simms Rd, Campbell River, and Saturday, March 16 at the Comox United Church, 250 Beach Dr, Comox. Both performances start at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for ages eighteen and under and are available for purchase at www.helenajung.com, www.carterjohnsonpianist.com, or at the door.
