The Christmas cantata performed by a massed community choir at the Campbell River United Church on Dec. 23 raised a grand total of $2,620 for the local Food Bank.
A total of approximately 500 people attended the sold-out afternoon and evening performances.
Conductor Cindy Taylor, a well-known Campbell River pianist and music teacher, formed the 60-voice choir with choir members from the United Church, St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church and the broader community.
The choir was accompanied by Nicole Taylor, also a talented local piano teacher and performer.
This was only one of several mission and outreach projects supported by the Campbell River United Church and its members during the past few months.
Brenda Harrison, Mission and Outreach Coordinator, was instrumental in planning the Global Craft Fair at Timberline School on Dec. 1 and many members volunteered their labour.
On December 9, Amnesty International involved the church in its annual letter-writing campaign to oppose torture and other human rights abuses around the world.
Also on Dec. 9, the congregation marked White Gift Sunday by donating warm hats, mittens and socks for the homeless of Campbell River as well as more than $550 for the TeacHaiti project.The United Church also continues to support the Saturday Soup Kitchen throughout the year by providing volunteers, donations and insurance coverage.
Campbell River United Church, located at the corner of Pinecrest and South Birch, is “An inclusive community centered in Christ”.
Sunday worship and church school is at 10 a.m. every Sunday and all are welcome.
