Local Government Awareness Week runs May 15 to 21, and this province-wide initiative aims to generate awareness about the roles and responsibilities of local government.

“Local Government Awareness Week is also about encouraging people to participate in local government processes, including voting in local elections,” says Mayor Charlie Cornfield. “We’re developing activities for this week to get people interested in what local government does, and how they can be a more active part of it.”

As part of Local Government Awareness Week, the City of Campbell River will publish a trivia contest on its website (www.campbellriver.ca) under What’s New. Questions will be about city services, city facilities, how local government is funded, historical facts and the upcoming election.

The city will also publish a city services brochure and post a presentation on its website highlighting local government services and the municipal election process.

Paper copies of all materials (trivia contest, brochure and presentation) are available at City Hall for people who don’t have Internet access.

The contest will officially open May 16 and will close at the end of day May 24. People who send in the correct answers to the trivia contest questions will have their name entered in a draw.

The prize: dinner for two with the Mayor. The winner will be announced later in May.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 18, the City of Campbell River will also offer tours of local facilities people don’t usually get to visit: Fire Hall No.1, Dogwood Operations Centre, the Elk Falls Water Quality Centre and the Norm Wood Environmental Centre.

Tours of City Hall will also be available. Three 30-minutes tours will be offered at 1, 2 and 3:30 p.m. Tour size will be limited to 12 people, and bookings can be made by telephone.

Call City Hall at 250-286-5700 to reserve a space.
