As students start another school year, School District 72 is proud to announce that Carihi Secondary graduate Marita Lindenbach and Timberline Secondary graduate Ashley Nielsen are the 2015 recipients of the prestigious Governor General’s Medallion.

The Governor General’s Medallion is awarded to one student from each secondary school throughout the province for achieving the highest, combined academic grade-point average during their Grade 11 and 12 years.

In addition to being an outstanding academic student, Lindenbach was actively involved in drama, leadership and athletics, earning the Glyn Fitzgerald award as Carihi Secondary’s top all-around student. Those who attended Carihi Musical Theatre’s presentation of Legally Blonde last year would also have enjoyed Marita’s performance as the lead character, Elle Woods. Lindenbach is now pursuing a Bachelor of Elementary Education at the University of Victoria.

Nielsen, Timberline’s top academic student, gained praise from all of her teachers for her attention to detail and consistent, quality work. Within the community, Nielsen participated in martial arts, took the Leaders in Training course through Strathcona Gardens, and worked part-time at Starbucks. This dedication to her studies and strong work ethic will carry her well as she starts first year sciences at the University of Victoria.

“We wish both Ashley and Marita all the best in their future endeavors,” says Tom Longridge, superintendent for School District 72. “These young ladies greatly contributed to their respective school communities while demonstrating dedication to their studies. These traits will carry them far on whichever path they choose.”
