Rotary’s annual book sale – a chance to get a bag full of books for $20 – is taking place at Discovery Harbour Mall this weekend.

Books were disappearing fast as readers like Bill Jeffrey – a fan of mysteries – filled their bags on Saturday morning. The annual sale “keeps me going through the year,” said Jeffrey.

Proceeds support efforts such as water, health and sanitation services overseas, said Ian Baikie, president of the Rotary Club of Campbell River, which organizes the event jointly with Campbell River Daybreak Rotary.

The two clubs have raised up to $15,000 at past book sales, he said. That money goes towards efforts including a maternal health project in Nepal that received $65,000 USD stemming from fundraising efforts in Campbell River.

Baikie added that funds gathered locally are complemented by contributions from the federal government and Rotary International.

“If we put a buck in, we know it’s going to turn into three or four,” he said.

The event continues on Sunday, and details can be found on the Campbell River Rotary website.
