Former Campbell River councillor Bill Matthews had a great time at this year’s annual wine festival at NIC’s Campbell River campus.

North Island College tourism students will bring cheer to Cuba this January, as part of their annual field school to an international resort.

Each year, students in the second year of the Tourism & Hospitality diploma program choose the location, organize activities, and fundraise for an international trip, which exposes them to new perspectives and cultures.

Beginning Jan. 2, 12 second-year students will spend eight days visiting key Cuban attractions, meeting tourism professionals, and getting a behind-the-scenes view of how Cuban tourism businesses operate.

Students hope to bring unused stationary and school supplies, toiletries, vitamins, diapers and infant clothing and other products which are in very short supply in Cuba.

More than $8,000 was raised at this year’s wine festival, a Great Gatsby-themed event organized to support regional, provincial and international trips such as this.
