Newbark Canine Rescue and Rehoming Society, a registered non-profit charitable organization, is expanding its services into Campbell River thanks to a new group of volunteers.
Immediate plans include recruiting foster and adoptive homes and fundraising for veterinary and operation costs.
Since Newbark began rescuing dogs in 2009, the society’s mandate has been to help dogs find a home where they are wanted and loved, spayed or neutered and allowed to live their lives as happy dogs. Newbark operates through a foster home system so the more people who are willing to foster, the more dogs that are able to be helped.
The society provides food and medical expenses for animals in care as well as guidance and support for the guardians.
In 2013, a total of 83 dogs were re-homed through the society.
Last month the society held a spay/neuter clinic at the Tsa Xana Reserve near Gold River and during this one-day clinic 21 dogs and three cats were spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and provided with flea and parasite medication.
Additional clinics will be held on the Island when funding is secured.

The group appreciates donations of new or gently used items such as dry or canned dog food, harnesses, collars, leashes, beds, crates or toys. Drop off boxes are located at FoggDukkers Coffee, 907 South Island Highway and Dogwood Family Affair Hair Salon, 3-522 Dogwood Street (across from Merecroft Village).
