Habitat for Humanity has selected two families to be the recipients of new homes in Campbell River.
Pending board approval, the families will be able to call the new duplex, to be built at 480 Hilchey Road, home.
Deanna Hunt, a coordinator at the Campbell River Habitat for Humanity ReStore, said with the families in place, the next big step is to begin construction on the duplex.
“Now that we have our families we hope to break ground in mid-August and begin the construction of their new homes in September,” Hunt said. “We hope to introduce our families Saturday, June 14 at Spirit Square.”
This Saturday, Habitat is hosting a fundraiser, starting at 12 p.m., with live music from Habitat’s band, the ReRockers, and a salmon barbecue by Marine Harvest. There will be a silent auction full of items from the ReStore and free draws.
Habitat for Humanity operates under the belief that everyone has the right to a safe, decent and affordable home and in order to accomplish that,builds homes for the less fortunate.
Habitat’s homes are designed for hardworking, low income families who need a hand up into homeownership. To help the society accomplish this, the organization relies on volunteers, fundraising, and community partnerships.
Habitat also relies on the families of the homes who commit to 500 hours of sweat equity in lieu of a down payment.
All of this allows Habitat to offer zero per cent mortgages that are based on the families’ incomes.
