Dr. Karen Moosbrugger works on the new Argon Laser in the ophthalmology department at Campbell River Hospital. The system was purchased with the help of a large donation from the Woodward’s Foundation.

The Campbell River Hospital Foundation has received a $53,000 donation from the Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Woodward’s Foundation towards the purchase of the Argon Laser System for Ophthalmology at Campbell River Hospital.

This equipment is a new addition to the hospital and Ophthalmology services, and will allow North Island residents to obtain the necessary care at home rather than travelling out of town.  This equipment is capable of performing many different procedures that include:

  • Treatment of Diabetic and Hypertensive Retinopathy (High Blood Pressure)

  • Treatment of tears, holes or impending retinal detachment

  • Prevent or treat an attack of acute Glaucoma, a potential blinding ocular emergency

  • Treatment of Macular Edema

  • Treatment of scar tissue that may occur following Cataract surgery

  • Treatment of chronic Glaucoma that is not responsive to topical medications

  • Laser design is appropriate to care for patients that are wheelchair bound

“The Argon Laser has given patients the choice to receive treatment close to home,” says Stacey Marsh, executive director of the hospital foundation. “We are very grateful to the Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Woodward’s Foundation for their support; this equipment is an important addition in health care for Campbell River and North Vancouver Island.”

The Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Woodward’s Foundation was established in 1951 when Puggy Woodward, son of Woodward’s Department Stores founder Charles Woodward, formalized his gift giving into a foundation that would outlive him and benefit the health of British Columbians for many generations.
