A Campbell River environmental group is hosting a film screening on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day.

The Council of Canadians’ Campbell River chapter will be screening two B.C.-made films at the Campbell River Sportsplex. The films are “Fracking the Peace” by Stand.earth, and “Troubled Water,” directed by Paul Manly.

The first film was made in 2021 and follows people in the northeastern part of the province “whose lives, water and land have been changed by LNG (liquid natural gas) fracking,” a release from the Council of Canadians says.

The second film was made in 2013. It was directed by Paul Manly, who later served as Green Party MP for Nanaimo-Ladysmith from 2019 until 2021 and currently sits as a city councillor in Nanaimo. The film looks at threats to public water systems and watersheds, using eastern Vancouver Island as a case study.

The event will also celebrate the Campbell River chapter of the Council of Canadians’ 25th anniversary. The event will commemorate past and current actions “involving local, national and international social justice and environmental issues such as protection of our water and watershed and old growth forests; eliminating plastics pollution; opposing corporate trade agreements; promoting publicly funded and administered quality health care available to all citizens in a timely manner, and transitioning away from fossil fuel production and exports and open net fish farms in our coastal waters.”

There will be displays by Council of Canadians and other local environmental groups and a draw for prizes following the film screenings.

The event has free admission, and doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The event will be in Room 1 at the Sportsplex at 1800 S. Alter Street. The films begin at 7 p.m.
