Special Olympics athletes had a ball Sunday at upper Robron field.
Actually, they had a lot of them.
Campbell River Special Olympics hosted its annual Invitational Bocce Tournament and drew approximately 90 athletes from across Vancouver Island, Salt Spring Island and Powell River.
With dozens over volunteers serving as referees, coaches and support crews, athletes alternately squared off on the grass courts and relaxed under large canopies erected to provide shade on a blistering summer day.
In all, 16 teams of players took part in the action, including seven from Campbell River.
Visiting clubs included Nanaimo, Oceanside, Port Alberni, Powell River and Salt Spring.
