Jocelyn Doll/Campbell River Mirror The Campbell River Air Cadets won first for a small drill team on the Island last weekend.

Campbell River’s Air Cadet Drill Team was awarded top honours at the Island Area Drill Team Competition in Victoria last weekend.

The team of 10 with their Drill Team Commander, Flight Sergeant Harley McCoy, placed first in the small team division and McCoy came a close second in being named the Top Drill Team Commander.

Tanja Shields, president of the Campbell River Air Youth Association Sponsoring Committee, said she wasn’t expecting the team to win as they are mostly junior cadets, which makes her even more proud of their accomplishments.

The drill competition includes a compulsory pre-set routine of movements in response to commands as well as a memorized routine developed by the cadets themselves.

They compete in teams of either 10, 16, or 21 and are judged based on their adherence to the Canadian Forces Drill Manual both individually and as a group.
