The Maritime Heritage Centre in Campbell River will celebrate 20 years as a hub for educational, social and cultural activities on June 1.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the community is invited to celebrate the centre’s remarkable journey of community collaboration, and the dedication that brought it to life.

Opened in 2004 after a monumental effort led by the Daybreak Rotary Club, the Maritime Heritage Centre hosts a range of community activities in a setting that celebrates the maritime history of Campbell River.

“Our Mission Statement, ‘To promote educational and social activities alongside the collection and preservation of artifacts. To foster an appreciation of west coast maritime heritage and provide space for the community to gather,’ guides our work and inspires us to create meaningful experiences for our visitors,” says Erika Anderson, the centre’s executive director.

The 20th-anniversary celebration will feature a barbecue by donation to the Maritime Heritage Society, providing an opportunity to enjoy delicious food while supporting a valuable community organization. The event will also offer free admission to the Museum, including tours of the BCP 45, the restored wooden seine fishing vessel once featured on the Canadian $5 bill, that holds historical significance. Its restoration and preservation have earned it recognition as a Nationally Recognized Historic Monument.

Families are encouraged to attend, as there will be children’s activities to enjoy. Additionally, a pop-up video booth will be available, inviting attendees to share their stories and memories of the building of the Maritime Heritage Centre, creating a lasting record of the community’s connection to this historic site.
