Campbell River’s U13 Boys rep team, the CRYSA Warriors, hosted three teams last weekend at Willow Point Park who were vying for the Upper Island berth in the Island Invitational Cup.
The opening of the round-robin tournament saw the Campbell River squad face off against their Comox rivals Saturday morning and while they controlled large portions of the game, holding the Comox team in their own half, the back of the net was elusive, while Comox took advantage of lapses to win the game 3-1.
Next up for Campbell River was Nanaimo,a game in which the Warriors regained the confidence and scoring ability that have put them on top of the Upper Island Soccer Association divisional standings during the regular season, finishing with a 3-1 win over Nanaimo.
Sunday’s final game had Campbell River matched up against Mid-Isle, a team rapidly improving in the standings.
Campbell River came out with confidence, pressuring Nanaimo into mistakes deep in the opposing team’s end, and converting two of several opportunities into goals.
The first half ended 2-1 Campbell River. In the second half, Mid-Isle had re-grouped, foiling Campbell River’s attacking style with a defensive formation that held up despite great effort by the Warriors.
A defensive error allowed a long ball into the Warrior net, tying the game for a long time, until near the end when a final Mid-Isle goal brought the game to a conclusion at 3-2 for Mid-Isle.
Mid-Isle finished top of the round-robin tournament, winning all three of its games, and will be the Upper Island rep at the Island Invitational Cup, to be held in a month against the Lower Island’s representative team.
Campbell River coaches and players see the tournament as a final opportunity to learn about these opponents as they head into Provincial Cup play-off games, starting this Sunday, Feb 10, when Campbell River hosts nemesis the Comox TimberWolves here at Cedar School field, 1 pm.
