Tyees take tournament title

Campbell River baseball squad steps up to Tier 1, repeats as champions of annual Cloverdale tourney

The Campbell River Mosquito AAA Tyees played up in tier 1 and rolled to their second straight title in the Cloverdale Boulanger Tournament June 27-29.

In the tourney opener, Owen Lagos homered and the Tyees played error free defence behind pitchers Ethan Vaton, Gareth MacDonald, Tyson Olsen and Wyatt Murray an 11-3 win over Chilliwack.

Game 2 against Abbotsford Angels was a nail-biter that ended in a 5-4 win as pitcher Carter Hall and catcher Wyatt Dumont teamed to stop a runner stealing home for the final out. Ty Ludwikowski, Dumont and Hall handled the pitching duties and Ryder Plecas hit an RBI double.

A 9-5 win over the Ladner Red Sox followed. Deagle blasted a three-run homer, Lagos had an RBI triple and Mills drove in a run. Hall pitched 4-plus innings for the win and Olsen closed the game.

The Tyees then blasted the Cloverdale Spurs 10-1 in Monday's final, with Murray and Deagle setting the early tone with RBI doubles. Vaton threw five strong innings, allowing only one run. Murray came in to close and shut the door.
