Strong cross country showing from Campbell River

The top 20 boys and girls qualify for the BC Provincial Championships on Nov. 2 in Aldergrove

The Vancouver Island High School Cross-country Championships were held Oct. 23 at Beaver Lake Park in Victoria.

Grade 8 to 12 boys ran 6.7 km and the girls ran 4.5 km.  The top 20 boys and girls qualify for the BC Provincial Championships on Nov. 2 in Aldergrove.

The top four teams qualify also.

The top 20 runners from Campbell River were 8th place Haven Ullstrom (Timberline), 10th place Brendan Hoff (Carihi), 18th place Tyrell Barley (Carihi), 6th place Joanna Williams (Campbell River Christian School), and 12th place Lisa Eberlein (Carihi).

There were 224 boys and 169 girls competing.

The Carihi boys team placed third but don’t plan to attend Provincials due to other sports committments.

The Provincial Championships will be different this year with an open Junior Championship in addition to the qualifying Senior one.

This is the first ever sanctioned (pilot) Junior event in any sport in BCSS history.

To qualify for the Junior event, athletes must be in Grades 8 to 10 and complete the Zone Championship course.  Coaches are encouraged to enter competitive appropriate Junior athletes and teams.  Juniors qualifying in the top 20 of the Zone Championship will choose to run in either the Junior or the Senior race.
