Round 1 of the Drifting, Drag racing and Time Attack events of the season took place last Saturday as cars from across the Island made their way to Saratoga Speedway.

Two separate classes were run in the Drag racing class – one being street tires only and the other being slick tires.

Going into the street car finals, it would be the battle of the Mustangs with Jason Johnson in his 2013 Mustang facing off against Dane Moore in his 2016 Mustang, with Johnson slightly edging out Moore to take home the Street car finals.

In the Slick finals, Brandon Ludvigson, who was riding his 2003 Yamaha, would face off against Mike Weinraugh in his 1987 Monte Carlo, but it would be Ludvigson who got the slight edge of the start and would use that advantage to take home the victory.

The Time Attack class saw a new high in car count with 11 cars taking to the track. Mike McEree in his 2015 BMW M3 would set the time to beat with a 56.205 going into the final round, only to better his time in the finals and take home the win.

The drifting class saw some of the best and tightest drifting seen at the Speedway. After some early eliminations in the drifting class, the final saw Steve Fisher in his 1991 Nissan Silvia go up against Daerion Zaruk in his 1990 Nissan 240sx. After two very close runs, Fisher would nearly edge out Zaruk to take home the victory.

Are you planning on staying home over the long weekend? Don’t have any plans? Well, Saratoga Speedway is the place to be as they once again present the largest monster truck show of the year. Kelvin Ramer and his 17-year-old daughter Rosalee are set to return to the Speedway after putting on what was one of the best performances ever seen by any monster trucks at Saratoga last year.

Rosalee is fresh off of winning the 2015 Rookie of the year title for Monster Jam, which is the largest and most prestigious monster truck circuit in the world. Her father is no stranger to the limelight either, as he, too, is a long time competitor in the Monster Jam circuit.

Local driver Colin Van Dyk will be running in the Blown Income truck, with Crude Behavior driven by Jared Vogel rounding out the list of Monster Trucks who be tearing it up over the long weekend. Accompanying the Monster trucks will be the Crash to Pass cars, Hornet cars, Roadrunners, Bomber cars and the first appearance of our new class the Mad Max Racers, who will be joining the fun on Sunday.

If you would like to get a first look at these beautiful trucks, they will all be on display at Courtenay Canadian Tire throughout the week.
